The Merchant of Venice, with its celebrated and moving passages, remains one of Shakespeare’s most beautiful plays. Depending on whom you ask, it also remains one of his most repulsive. The question as to whether or not the play is anti-semitic is still debated by scholars today, over 450 years after Shakespeare’s death. In this lecture, we will take a closer look at The Merchant of Venice to see whether it was, indeed, a "profoundly anti-semitic play" or, on the contrary, an invitation to engage with the difficult moral issues presented by the play and to make us think about our own behaviour towards others who, like Shylock, are different from us.
