Kursformat	Online-Kurs: Der gesamte Kurs findet digital per Videokonferenztechnik statt. Sie benötigen einen PC mit Lautsprecher/Mikrofon und Kamera oder alternativ Headset und Kamera. Sie können auch ein Notebook (typischerweise Kamera und Lautsprecher/Mikrofon integriert), Smartphone oder Tablet zur Teilnahme nutzen. In allen Fällen benötigen Sie eine stabile Internetverbindung.

Kursbeschreibung:

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue und street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day.” 

For about a quarter century after the Cold War, significant parts of the world had tried to stay clear of George Orwell’s novel “1984” becoming a reality. However, in the last 10 years, we have had to realize that at least some of the grim aspects of the book have (re)surfaced. Even in the liberal democracies of the West.

Instead of just being a book with historical references to the barbaric regimes of the 1930s and ‘40s, “1984” offers insights into the workings of authoritarian and totalitarian politics of the present. How long can independent-mindedness survive in such an environment—that is probably the most important question “1984”deals with.

We will read and speak about key sections of the book. It is not necessary to have read it through before the first session. 
There is an inexpensive English-language Reclam edition of the book that we can use in the course, but don’t make any purchase until the start of the course actually takes place.
